Guérande, the medieval city
A town of Art and History, Guérande offers its visitors a remarkable historical and cultural heritage. Inside its 14th and 15th century ramparts, the old town with its narrow streets and stone houses has a real charm.
Equipped with fortifications that make it a jewel of military architecture, Guérande is the only urban enclosure in Brittany that has been completely preserved.
The enclosure extends over approximately 1300 metres and is pierced by four gates: Saint-Michel to the east, Vannetaise to the north, Bizienne to the west and Saillé to the south.
Located in the heart of the city, the imposing Collegiate Church of Saint-Aubin was built between the 12th and 16th centuries. In flamboyant gothic style, it is original with its elegant exterior pulpit and surprising with its choir with its so-called "illusionist" architecture.
In the town, the alleys, passages, courtyards, shops and craftsmen's workshops are steeped in a typically medieval atmosphere.
Every year, Guérande goes back in time with its Medieval Festivals: acrobats, troubadours and stilt-walkers enliven the town with shows, parades, balls and banquets...
